The Issue

My son has been bullied for 4 years at his current school. He has felt so low and has been in such a dark place that he tried to take his own life. This is heartbreaking and frustrating, especially since there have been no real repercussions for the child responsible. When I called 101 to have it on record or even for the police to have a chat, I was told it's not a police matter. However, if my son were to actually succeed in taking his life, then it would become a police matter. This reactive approach is unacceptable and needs to change.

Bullying in schools and colleges across the nation is a pervasive issue, driving many children and young adults to self harm or even consider suicide. According to a recent survey by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, over 34% of children in the UK have experienced bullying at some point during school, which can lead to serious long-term consequences for their mental and emotional well-being.

The police should have a mandated role in intervening and addressing bullying incidents in schools before they escalate to such harmful extents. This could include implementing educational programs in schools, conducting regular workshops about the seriousness of bullying, and offering a supportive presence by visiting schools to talk to both victims and bullies. Having police actively involved in anti-bullying strategies could deter potential bullies and help victims feel safer and heard.

Moreover, establishing clear protocols and communication channels between schools and local police forces can ensure timely intervention when necessary. This should be a cooperative effort involving educators, parents, and law enforcement to create a safe and supportive environment for all students.

Let us urge the government to make police intervention in school bullying mandatory across the country. This change could save lives and put an end to the trauma and heartbreak experienced by so many families. Please sign this petition to protect our children and demand action for change.
