The Issue

This week alone, we have found two dead snakes and two living snakes trapped in landscaping netting left by government contractors! Please sign to make this horrible, unethical practice illegal.

The landscaping netting is not biodegradable and does not seem to break down, even a decade after put in place. It traps birds, turtles, snakes, and other wildlife, and is a tripping hazard for the elderly.

Plastic landscape netting is marketed for convenience and low maintenance, but it is a hidden death trap for countless species. The flexible mesh designed to grip the soil also grips the necks, wings, and legs of unsuspecting wildlife, leading to agonizing deaths. Turtles, small mammals, and reptiles are particularly vulnerable, and many never get the chance to break free. In addition to the heart-wrenching casualties, this netting poses significant risks to the larger ecosystem, disrupting the balance and leading to negative impacts that ripple out.

Even more alarming, this netting is often hidden beneath mulch and vegetation, camouflaging its danger from plain view until it's too late. This plastic netting is responsible for the injury and death of tens of thousands animals each year (estimated). These findings are supported by wildlife conservation organizations who, advocate for alternative solutions such as biodegradable netting or other barrier landscapes that are wildlife-friendly.

The tragedy of seeing innocent animals suffering is one too great to bear, and it's preventable. Countries such as Canada have already taken steps to ban or regulate harmful landscape materials. The United States should not lag behind. **By switching to biodegradable materials**, we not only save the precious lives of wildlife but also reduce long-lasting plastic waste in our environment.

Join me in urging legislators and environmental agencies to make plastic landscape netting illegal. Only then can we pave the way for a future where our yards and landscapes are safe havens rather than death traps for our precious wildlife. Sign this petition to demand change and protect the creatures that play a vital role in the tapestry of our environment.
