Make Petersfield Road Safe for Cars, Children, and Pedestrians

The Issue

Please sign this petition to show your support in lobbying the City and County Council to provide some measures to reduce the speed of traffic along Petersfield Road. The 20mph limit is ignored by many and, whilst in other areas of the City traffic calming measures have been put in place to regulate speed, nothing has been done in Petersfield Road even though there is a school entrance.

There have been several vehicle collisions, one car written off and, more importantly, ‘near misses’ between cars, children and pedestrians.

These concerns were made clear to our elected Councillors, Winchester City
Council and Hampshire County Council, requesting that they provide yellow
zig zag lines either side of the Church Car Park entrance (which includes the Pre-School and All Saints School entrance) and a ramp across the road between the path from Quarry Road to Petersfield Road. The car park is often filled to capacity.

The lines would allow motorists a clearer view when exiting the Church Car Park and the ramp would moderate vehicle speed at a blind pedestrian
junction from the pathway linking Quarry Road directly onto Petersfield Road.

An electronic traffic survey (carried out by HCC) for a period of one week showed that the road was used by over 9,000 vehicles, and overall, 83% were exceeding the speed limit at an average of 36mph.

The response from both Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council has been negative to our requests, citing the following excuses:

  • No injury-accidents have been reported
  • Introducing school road markings would be resource intensive
  • The road is lightly trafficked
  • The roads are in a state of managed disrepair.

A request to refresh the paint on the 20mph roundels has also fallen on deaf ears.

Our MP Steve Brine was approached, he visited Petersfield Road and whilst he acknowledged there was a serious problem, he was unable to do anything without the clear support of Residents living in Petersfield Road, Chesil Wood and Chalk Ridge.

If enough Residents show support for by responding to the attached petition we will stand a much better chance of achieving some action.

Please respond and help us lobby Councils for some action before there is a serious accident.

Thank you for your support in trying to make Petersfield Road a safer place for all.
