Make Peanut Allergy Immunotherapy Available on the NHS in Scotland

The Issue

I am calling on the Scottish Government to make peanut allergy immunotherapy available on the NHS in Scotland, following the example of NHS England. Currently, families in Scotland have no access to this life-changing and potentially life-saving treatment unless they can afford private care, which is prohibitively expensive for most.

Peanut allergy is one of the most common and dangerous food allergies among children. It can lead to severe anaphylaxis, which can be fatal. As a mother of a three-year-old with a severe peanut allergy, I am devastated that effective treatment is not available to all Scottish families.

Oral immunotherapy (such as Palforzia) is proven to reduce the risk of severe reactions and can dramatically improve the quality of life for children and their families. It is already being offered under the NHS in England to eligible patients.

We believe that the cost of this treatment must be weighed against the long-term burden on emergency services, hospital admissions, and the psychological toll on families living in constant fear. No more preventable deaths should occur simply because this treatment is not accessible. Every child in Scotland deserves the same opportunity for protection and peace of mind.

Please support the availability of peanut allergy immunotherapy through the NHS in Scotland to protect lives and promote health equity.
