The Issue

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire and should be a thriving destination for residents, shoppers and visitors. However, many people are telling us that high parking charges and increasing congestion are discouraging them from visiting, with some choosing to shop elsewhere instead.

With the closure of the Meole Brace Park & Ride, demand for town centre parking is only likely to increase.

We, the undersigned, call on Shropshire Council to undertake an urgent review of parking in Shrewsbury and introduce measures that encourage more people to visit our county town.

We ask the Council to consider:

Reducing parking charges in council-owned car parks, particularly higher-cost locations such as Raven Meadows.

Bringing parking charges more in line with those at other Shropshire Council car parks where appropriate.

Introducing regular free parking periods, such as selected weekdays, evenings or seasonal promotions, to encourage shoppers and visitors.

Developing a parking strategy that supports local businesses while ensuring parking remains accessible and affordable.

A vibrant town centre benefits everyone. Affordable and accessible parking can help attract more visitors, support independent businesses, increase footfall and strengthen Shrewsbury’s local economy.
