As a concerned citizen of Maine, USA, I am writing this petition to address the urgent need for legislation that criminalizes parental alienation. This issue is deeply personal to me as my significant other is currently experiencing the devastating effects of parental alienation. It is heart-wrenching to witness the emotional distress caused by this destructive behavior, not only on my loved one but also on countless children and parents across our state. 

Parental alienation refers to the deliberate manipulation or brainwashing of a child by one parent against the other, often resulting in severing their bond and causing long-lasting psychological harm. This rings true for the alienated parent as well and is not something a parent should have to deal with.

Despite its detrimental impact on families and society as a whole, there is currently no specific law in Maine that addresses parental alienation as a criminal offense. By enacting legislation that recognizes parental alienation as an offense punishable under law, we can send a strong message that this harmful behavior will not be tolerated within our communities.
