Make Our Streets Safer: Implement Speed Controls on Church Street and surrounding roads
The Issue
Our community is deeply concerned about the safety of Church Street and the surrounding roads. This area suffers from an ever increasing number of speeding drivers on a daily basis, often exceeding 30mph, despite the road being in a designated 20mph zone. Moreover, it has become a shortcut to avoid traffic through Clowne, exacerbating the situation and posing severe threat to pedestrians and local residents.
Statistics from the Department of Transport show that over 25% of all fatal car accidents in the UK are caused by excessive speeding (Department of Transport, 2020). This doesn't have to be our reality. We can and we must take action before it's too late.
We request the local council to take immediate action by implementing effective speed controls. These could include speed bumps, speed limit signs, and increased enforcement of speed regulations for Church Street and the connecting roads. Our children, elderly, pets, and all inhabitants of the neighbourhood deserve to live in an environment where safety isn't constantly compromised. Unfortunately this is too late for Thomas, a beloved family cat, who was mowed down by a careless individual who either lacked the decency to stop, or was simply travelling too fast to notice the devastation they caused. Let's make sure that this is the last preventable death on Church Street, or any of the surrounding roads.
Your signature could be the difference between a dangerous street and a safe community. Together, we can enhance the safety of our streets. Please, sign this petition today.
