Make Our Parks and Public Spaces Safe Again: Take Urgent Action on Homelessness in Nambour
The issue
We ask Sunshine Coast Council to urgently address the escalating safety, health, and environmental issues in Nambour parks and public spaces.
Homelessness is not illegal and should be met with compassion. However, the rise in long-term camping - often by individuals arriving from other regions - has led to serious impacts. Without access to hygiene facilities and sanitation, these informal campsites are creating unsanitary, unsafe conditions. Residents report public drug use, verbal abuse, intimidation, and environmental damage. Volunteer groups like BushCare have withdrawn from certain areas due to safety concerns.
While Council does not consider homeless camping illegal, the absence of clear enforcement is placing many including local workers, families, children, and elderly residents at risk. Tent encampments have become semi-permanent, with growing concerns around health, waste, fire hazards, and damage to public land.
We request Council to:
-
Develop enforceable guidelines to deter long-term camping and ensure timely removal from public areas
-
Provide alternative locations with hygiene facilities and outreach services
- Increase patrols of homeless encampments and community spaces to improve safety
- Install lighting, signage, and surveillance to discourage overnight stays
- Collaborate with the Queensland Government to manage inflows and expand housing options
- Clean up and restore damaged natural spaces regularly
- Communicate clearly with residents on actions and progress
We seek a compassionate but urgent response that restores safety, dignity, and fair access to public spaces for all.
