Make Open Captions Standard in Movie Theatres Across Canada

The Issue

We need open captions on movie screens to ensure true accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing audiences.

Current captioning devices are difficult to use, uncomfortable, and distracting. Watching a movie while reading captions on a small separate device takes away from the full experience.

We are asking theatres such as Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas to offer open caption screenings in at least one auditorium, on consistent days like Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Open captions benefit not only deaf and hard of hearing individuals, but also seniors, people with auditory processing challenges, and anyone who prefers captions.

Accessibility matters. It’s time to make this the standard.
