The Issue

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our concerns regarding the increasing cost and lack of safety measures in paragliding activities in Ölüdeniz. Paragliding has been a beloved recreational and tourist attraction in Ölüdeniz, providing joy and entertainment for both locals and visitors. However, recent developments have made it unaffordable for many and compromised the safety of participants and bystanders.

the babadag chairlift company is getting too expensive for visiting pilots who may fly multiple times a day and pilots see little value in the launch fee with no improvement to launch site  since this company took over

we know of no other paragliding site that charges an uplift and a launch fee

we do not understand why we are charged to use the launch when tourist are not charged to use the viewing area and walkways

pilots know this company would not be on the mountain without the paragliders  as the tourist go up to watch the the flying

with this in mind the pilots feel they are being exploited with current fees when they are the main attraction and have no alternative but to pay

pilots  feel that we should not be penalised with these costs to fly when we add so much to the area when we holiday spending in the local bars staying in hotels families members that dont fly spend locally

if we went to alternate sites the bars , hotels , restaurant's , tour operators and other local business would miss out on what is allready a decline in tourism

if prices too fly where made more affordable , more pilots and their  families would come to the area bringing much needed tourism money

pilots already are saying they will stay away and cancel future trips knowing that there are other more pilot friendly holiday areas

Moreover, we are deeply concerned about the inadequate safety measures currently in place.

and it witholds valuable information  for pilots that want to decide if they want to fly

, there is a lack of ground marshalls to warn tourists about incoming pilots who have to land where tourist are present

the beach is too crowded with obstacles which limits the bale out option for pilots

Therefore, we, the concerned paragliding enthusiasts, local residents, and supporters of the tourism industry, urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action. We propose the following measures:

  1. review the prices for pilots which should reflect the value they bring to the area , uplift fee which includes the launch fee comparable to the uplift tourists pay we only go 1 way , weekly , monthly discounted multi trip passes
  2. have ground marshals in the landing zones to make tourists aware of the landing zones and warn them about landing pilots
  3. mark and highlight with signage the landing zones
  4. ensure on take off that proper launch procedures are followed with no pilots pressuring other pilots to launch
  5. make available online the video feeds that exists on all take off so pilots can see which launches are operating and how busy they are
  6. cover the launches with matting of some sort as currently the block paving concrete damages wings
  7. remove some of the hazards on the beach to give a safe alternate landing a strip just 3 m wide the length of the beach should be hazard free

already pilots have expressed there concern over many of these issues and are looking for alternate destinations for there holidays and paragliding courses , pilots are aware without them the chairlift company would not exist and feel very little is given back to them

By implementing these recommendations, we believe that paragliding in Ölüdeniz can regain its appeal, attract more pilots, ensure their safety, and enhance the overall experience for all involved. We hope that our concerns are heard and acted upon swiftly to preserve the reputation of Ölüdeniz as a premier paragliding destination.
