Make NY a refuge state for the transgender and LGBTQIA community

Make NY a refuge state for the transgender and LGBTQIA community

The Issue

New York is home to thousands of transgender and gender non-confirming residents of all ages.

With the marked increase in laws targeting transgender youth, adults and families across the country, we think it's imperative to make New York a safe and welcoming state for all citizens and visitors.

Like Michigan, California, and Minnesota, we are calling on Governor Hochul to make New York a sanctuary, 'refuge' state where discrimination and persecution of transgender and gender non-conforming people is not tolerated and gender-affirming care remains accessible to all.

Every major medical association has deemed that gender-affirming care is life-saving care and greatly reduces self-harm and suicidal ideation among transgender youth and adults.

Here is a portion of Minnesota's decree:

“All state agencies must, to the fullest extent of their lawful authority, pursue opportunities and coordinate with each other to protect people or entities providing, assisting, seeking or obtaining gender affirming health care services in Minnesota.”

Brad Hoylman-Sigal (D, WF) 47th Senate District has introduced bill S2475A towards this end. Please urge your representatives to bring this to committee at the earliest possible moment so New Yorkers (and our guests) know they are safe and protected in their state.

As an 'trans elder' who transitioned in the South almost 45 years ago, I have called New York my home for over 25 years. I have felt safe and happy in New York, and I want the same for all our community, especially trans youth, their families living and working in New York as well as visitors.
