Currently, there are no written or enforced, PROACTIVE courses of action addressing ICE- we only have administrative regulations to follow for when ICE comes to our school sites. We need to ensure that they don’t even come and instill more fear and anxiety in our community. We need the district to make a public commitment to set clear rules that ensure all schools in New Haven remain safe, welcoming, and protective for all students and families, no matter their immigration status. Students shouldn’t have to wait in fear of ICE showing up and our district shouldn’t wait to act. There are students right now that are barely making it to school because of how debilitating the fear of ICE is. When they are coming to school, they’re coming to school with passports, documents, anything to defend their case. No student, NOBODY can be successful while living in fear for themselves or their families.
