Make New Haven a Safe Haven

Make New Haven a Safe Haven
The Issue
Many scholars and families within our district are nightly burdened by fear and stress due to the looming threat of ICE actions across the Bay Area. This pervasive anxiety not only affects their mental well-being but also significantly hampers their academic performance. Taxpayer dollars, which could otherwise fund essential school programs, are instead being diverted to support ICE activities, further straining our community.
Our goal is clear: we seek to ensure that every student in the New Haven Unified School District can attend school without fear. We are campaigning for the School Board to adopt a Sanctuary District Resolution. Such a resolution would serve as a public promise to uphold a set of rules ensuring our schools remain safe, welcoming, and protective spaces for all students and their families, regardless of immigration status.
The importance of this cause cannot be overstated. Our community thrives when diversity is celebrated and every family, regardless of their background, feels secure and supported. By instituting a Sanctuary District, we cultivate an environment where scholars can excel in their studies, free from the cloud of anxiety that currently hangs over their heads.
Furthermore, enacting this resolution will align district policies with our values of inclusivity and social justice. It will send a powerful message to other districts, showcasing leadership and compassion in these challenging times.
We urgently call upon the New Haven Unified School District School Board to pass this resolution and stand with us in solidarity. By doing so, you will not only be safeguarding the rights and safety of students and families but also affirming your commitment to nurturing a community where education is a sanctuary for all.
Join us in this crucial endeavor, and help us create a brighter, more secure future for every scholar in our district. Sign this petition to urge the New Haven Unified School District to become a Sanctuary District.
