Make national service a qualification for contesting elections

I deeply believe that those who lead India should first serve India. As a citizen of this great nation, it's a concern that our leaders, who make critical decisions affecting over 1.4 billion people, may not have first-hand experience in serving the nation they are elected to represent.
India stands as the largest democracy in the world, and our elected representatives have a monumental responsibility. They shape the future of national security, defence, public welfare, education, healthcare, and the economy. However, there is no requirement for them to have contributed to the nation through national service before entering politics. This gap needs addressing.
Just consider the impact of leaders who have personally served the country before stepping into their roles of power. National service could offer invaluable experience and perspective that could guide policy-making and governance. It might include serving in the armed forces, participating in community service projects, or contributing to national welfare schemes. Such a requirement would ensure that our leaders have demonstrated commitment to the nation’s values and experienced its realities.
This isn’t a novel concept. Countries like Israel and Switzerland have successfully implemented mandatory national service, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of national needs among those who eventually take up elected offices.
Applying similar measures in India could bridge the gap between our leaders and the citizens, ensuring that those who are entrusted with the country’s future have proven their dedication through service. It would instill a sense of responsibility, patriotism, and humility among politicians. They would likely be more empathetic and informed in their decision-making, aligning their actions more closely with public needs.
By signing this petition, we advocate for making national service a qualification to contest for elections in India. Together, we can push for a system where leaders truly understand and have served the nation they aspire to lead. Please support this vision for a more accountable and representative leadership.
