Make National Honor Society sashes free for students
Make National Honor Society sashes free for students
The Issue
The National Honor Society (NHS) represents the epitome of academic success and leadership among high school students across the United States. Being a part of the NHS is a prestigious honor that signifies a student's dedication to education, resilience, and contribution to the community. However, the current requirement for students to purchase their own NHS sashes, often priced at $30, places an unnecessary financial burden on families and students already striving to maintain academic excellence.
For many students, especially those from low-income families, this cost can be a significant barrier. No student should have to feel excluded from celebrating their hard-earned accomplishments due to financial constraints. The mission of NHS is to promote scholarship, service, leadership, and character. By charging for sashes, we inadvertently create an economic barrier to the full recognition of students’ achievements.
The solution is clear and achievable: the cost of NHS sashes should be waived, or alternatively, schools should absorb the cost as part of their celebration of student achievements. Funding can be sought through local educational grants, partnerships with educational foundations, or through a small allocation from the school’s existing budget dedicated to student encouragement programs.
Making sashes free would affirm the values the NHS stands for—equity, celebration of hard work, and support for all students regardless of their socioeconomic background. It would ensure that every student gets an equal opportunity to display pride in their achievements during graduation ceremonies.
Join us in advocating for a policy change that demonstrates fairness and support for educational accomplishments. Let’s call on school administrators, educators, and local policymakers to take action in ensuring the NHS sashes are made available free of charge to all students. By signing this petition, you pledge your support for a more equitable recognition of academic success. Together, we can make a difference.
