Make muzzles compulsory for all dogs on public transport across the UK

The Issue

My 80-year-old friend, a resident of Brighton, recently experienced a traumatic incident while traveling on a public bus with her small cavapoo companion, Rara. As they boarded, two larger dogs that were already on board attacked Rara viciously. One dog bit her leg, breaking it in two places, while the other inflicted additional injuries. Initial attempts to save Rara's leg through surgery were in vain, and amputation seemed the only option. Tragically, even that proved infeasible, and Rara was ultimately put to sleep. This heart-wrenching incident could have been avoided if the attacking dogs had been muzzled.

In honor of Rara and in support of those who have had similar experiences, we must act to prevent such incidents from occurring. The safety and comfort of all passengers, both human and animal, should be a priority on public transport across the UK.

By making muzzles compulsory for all dogs on public transport, we can significantly reduce the risk of dog attacks in these confined spaces. Muzzles are a practical and effective tool that can ensure the safety of everyone on board, especially elderly passengers and small animals who are most vulnerable.

Statistics show that dog attacks are not uncommon, with thousands of incidents occurring annually throughout the UK. A simple, preventative measure such as this can not only protect passengers but also foster a more peaceful and secure transit environment for everyone.

We urge the UK transport authorities to adopt this measure as a mandatory safety protocol. This legislation could make all the difference in preventing trauma and saving lives.
