Make mental healthcare free and confidential
The Issue
Universal Mental Healthcare: Guaranteed access to Free, Safe, Confidential Therapy for All.
Growing up, I experienced firsthand the damaging effects of misunderstanding and neglect when it came to mental health. In my family, therapy was dismissed as useless, and harmful actions like physical and verbal abuse were seen as acceptable forms of 'education.' My electronic devices were destroyed, and I was subjected to beatings, victim-blaming, guilt-tripping and verbal insults. At my new school, the bullying continued, with constant teasing, non-consensual sharing of my images, and social exclusion. These experiences left both visible and invisible scars, affecting my self-esteem, confidence, the way I approached my relationships, generating fuel for my anxiety and creating more social barriers. They made me feel completely alone, with no support from family or friends, too afraid to ask for help in other places.
Recently, when some classmates were talking about a girl who committed suicide because of school bullying, one of the teachers overheard the discussion.
They expressed their opinion that "Only weak people commit such things and school bullying is exaggerated. I'm sure she did this because she was scared of the exams. You know how much I went through in my life? And I never even thought about it because I'm not weak! People feel pity for that girl but I think such weak people dont deserve to live anyway if they aren't able to get through such 'problems'!", which shows how mental problems are viewed by some people, especially from older generations, and how frequent school bullying still is.
It shows how desensitization makes some forget that every single life is valuable, and that every single individual goes through personal problems that shouldn't be compared. It is a tragedy that children are still losing their lives because they don't have access to mental healthcare or are too afraid of asking for it.
No child should have to feel isolated, worthless, or scared to reach out for help. This is why we call on governments and international bodies to make mental healthcare a free, universal right. We demand guaranteed access to confidential, on-demand psychological support within educational institutions provided by a qualified therapist or psychologist to safely address abuse, trauma and emotional distress early. This service must provide absolute client confidentiality, a completely non-judgmental healing space, and practical solutions for life's challenges. It is essential for building trust and enabling people to open up, which is pivotal for effective mental health treatment.
While some schools and institutions may provide such support, many students don't take certain qualified psychologists seriously because of the surface-level lessons they organize once every few years with an entire class at the same time, or because their training relies on outdated methodologies.
This proactive approach can prevent the long-term trauma that children and even parents face, fostering healthier family environments transcending generations.
We cannot afford to delay. Implementing such a system is not an insurmountable task. It requires commitment from our governments, healthcare professionals, and society to change the narrative around mental health and provide the necessary resources to those in need.
Mental health is not a luxury; it is a biological and social necessity, and should be a human right.
Sign this petition to demand that governments fund free, safe, and confidential psychological services for every citizen.
Together, we can create a healthier, more understanding world for future generations, protect us all from hidden abuse, toxic environments and give a safe space to heal!
