Make Mental Health Care a Priority, Not a Privilege

Make Mental Health Care a Priority, Not a Privilege
The Issue
Access to mental health care is a civic issue we face not only in Canada but on a global scale.
6.7 million Canadians are affected by mental illness, but many still do not have access to services. Why should we let people continue to suffer without receiving the help they need?
Some Factual Consequences:
- Every year, almost 4,000 Canadians die by suicide. 1,000 of them are children, as stated by Dr. Catherine Zahn.
- More than two-thirds of suicide victims do not obtain professional mental health care in the year before they pass away, including consulting a general practitioner or mental health specialist for mental health or drug use issues.
- Youth from lower-income groups experience higher mental health rates than those from higher-income groups.
- When individuals don't have enough community mental health services, it causes struggles in finance, such as unaffordable housing and insufficient income, making it even harder for them to maintain mental well-being and increasing the risk of poverty.

Everyone faces a mental health issue to a degree and has shared experiences that make us understand one another. However, there are issues that are too hard to solve yourself, and individuals who don’t have a close support system, so mental health services are crucial for their well-being.
