Make men and women have equal rights and opportunities
The Issue
Currently, both genders are trapped in escalating, systemic crises that threaten their fundamental safety, legal standing, and human dignity. For women, this manifests as a coordinated assault on their basic citizenship and bodily autonomy, driven by aggressive legislative rollbacks targeting voting access, equal employment protections, and reproductive healthcare. These institutional shifts effectively strip women of their voice in democracy and control over their own futures. For men, the crisis centers on a severe and hidden epidemic of domestic abuse and a devastating mental health emergency, where millions face physical violence and coercive control but are left entirely unprotected by a society that often shames male vulnerability. Ultimately, both struggles represent a profound failure of our legal and social safety nets.
Growing up, my family often talked about how women needed equal rights, and those protections remain vital today. Women’s rights still remain in need of protection and conversation. However, growing up as a young man, I also want to add more deep conversations about struggles that affect men. For instance, if a man tells someone that his wife is physically abusing him, he can be dismissed and told to "toughen up."
Furthermore, mental health is another area of deep disparity. If a man expresses suicidal thoughts, he may be ridiculed, told to "man up," or even receive encouragement to take such drastic steps. According to the World Health Organization, men are substantially less likely to seek mental health support compared to women. This disparity is directly tied to societal norms that stigmatize male vulnerability, forcing men to hide their struggles and fueling an escalating suicide crisis. I believe that women having the space to speak up and gain support is critical to maintaining a healthy culture. My wish is that one day we will have a society that encourages men to feel like they can speak up as well.
I am not saying that women do not face struggles too, because I know they do. We absolutely need to focus on giving women the same opportunities as men, equal wages, and offering critical protections in society and under the law. However, I also believe that making sure men do not commit suicide, normalizing male emotional expression, ensuring men are judged fairly when accused of abuse, and providing them with greater support is something worth fighting for. We can, and should, do both. Equality is not a competition, and fighting for equal rights doesn’t mean we need to replace one fight with another. Rather, true equality requires each and every one of us to advocate for change in the areas we see that need changing.
Sign this petition to demand that our lawmakers and community leaders work towards genuine gender equality, where both men and women can enjoy the same rights, protections, and respect. Together, we can create a fairer world for everyone.
