Make medical absences excused in New Jersey schools

Make medical absences excused in New Jersey schools

The Issue

Students should not have to choose between their health and their education.

Right now, too many students in New Jersey are put in an impossible position: go to school while sick, or stay home and risk falling behind, getting penalized, or even losing credit. No student should have to sit in class feeling miserable, exhausted, or unable to focus just because they are afraid of what will happen if they miss another day.

This is not just unfair. It is harmful. When students are pressured to attend school despite legitimate health issues, it sends the message that their well-being matters less than perfect attendance. It teaches young people to ignore their bodies, push through illness, and sacrifice their health out of fear. That is not what school should stand for.

This problem affects students across New Jersey. About 15% of New Jersey students were chronically absent in 2023–24, and under current rules, that number includes absences for any reason, including illness. At the same time, New Jersey does not recognize physical or mental health absences as state-excused absences under current state law. That means students with real medical needs can still be caught in a system that treats their absence as a problem instead of a circumstance that deserves compassion.

New Jersey is also behind a growing national movement to recognize student health more seriously. As of November 2025, 17 states had passed laws specifically allowing excused absences for students’ mental or behavioral health.  New Jersey has debated similar changes, but students here still do not have those protections at the statewide level. Students with documented illnesses, chronic conditions, medical appointments, surgeries, or mental health struggles deserve support, flexibility, and a fair chance to make up their work. They should not be made to feel like a burden for being sick. They should not be forced to risk their recovery just to protect their academic record.

We are calling on New Jersey schools and state leaders to make medically documented absences fully protected and to ensure that students are not denied credit because of legitimate health-related absences. A fair education system should help students heal and succeed, not punish them for circumstances beyond their control.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for every student who has ever walked into school sick out of fear, every family forced to choose between health and attendance, and every young person who deserves compassion instead of punishment.
