The Issue

I have always loved maths; it was one of my favourite lessons, and I love to spend my spare time learning complicated maths from YouTube videos. Having sets in maths was a great improvement from primary school. Since maths is no longer in sets, I have lost my spark, and now dread math lessons. I know I’m not the only pupil who feels this way.

Sets improve the learning experience for all students by ensuring the challenges students face are neither too hard nor too easy. For students in lower sets, this means they are not overshadowed by peers who dominate class discussions, allowing for more interaction and quality learning. Conversely, students in higher sets benefit from being appropriately challenged and paced. Personally, as a top set student, I have only found three topics in the syllabus that were new to me at the start of year 9, and we've already covered one of them. This clearly demonstrates how sets can cater to diverse learning needs and improve overall student engagement and achievement.
