Make London’s New Year’s Eve 2026 fireworks-free

Make London’s New Year’s Eve 2026 fireworks-free
The Issue
Last night, I was encouraged to watch the fireworks and instead of wonder, I felt grief. Because behind the colour and applause is a reality we can no longer ignore: fear, pollution, waste, and harm; repeated year after year, simply because “that’s how it’s always been done”. Fireworks are not harmless celebrations. They are environmental and social damage, disguised as beauty.
London is celebrated for its grandeur and its iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks. But it's time for a change. Our annual tradition of fireworks is responsible for significant air pollution, disturbing wildlife, adding unnecessary waste, and causing immense stress and anxiety to vulnerable individuals.
Every New Year, tonnes of harmful chemicals and particulates enter London's air. According to a study published by the Environment Agency, fireworks could contribute up to 60% of our annual exceedance of the particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution standard. This heavy cloud of pollution lingers well past the celebrations, contributing to respiratory problems and other health issues for London’s residents.
Wildlife suffers too. Birds and other animals can be easily frightened by loud fireworks, leading to stressful flocking behaviours and even fatal accidents. New Year’s Eve should be an occasion of joy, not one that endangers the lives of creatures who share our city.
Moreover, fireworks generate vast amounts of debris, much of which ends up polluting rivers and green spaces. It contradicts our collective efforts to reduce waste and protect our environment.
What alternatives do we have? Many cities are moving towards more environmentally friendly celebrations. Laser light shows, drone displays, or even virtual reality experiences can provide awe-inspiring displays without the ecological cost. Sydney, for instance, has introduced a stunning drone show to replace traditional fireworks, reducing ecological footprint while still providing a splendid spectacle.
London can lead by example, opting for a more sustainable celebration that respects our community's health and environment. Let's start by making the New Year’s Eve 2026 a fireworks-free celebration and consider innovative alternatives that reflect our commitment to a healthier planet.
Sign this petition to urge London's city council to innovate festive traditions by banning New Year’s Eve fireworks and adopting clean celebrations instead.
