Make London Excel Walkway Accessible for Disabled Pedestrians During Events

Make London Excel Walkway Accessible for Disabled Pedestrians During Events
The Issue
Having personal experience with the lack of accommodation when walking past the Excel London events, I feel compelled to bring attention to a pressing issue faced by numerous residents of Newham London. Living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, a condition that impacts the bone structure in my left leg, I've repeatedly encountered dismissive and hurtful comments from event security. When I request access across the walkway to get home, I'm met with skepticism, ableism and asked for proof of my disability. These interactions are not only emotionally taxing but highlight a deeper issue of ableism ingrained within event management practices.
For those who are disabled, elderly, or have hidden disabilities, the current policy requiring them to detour over a mile around the dock is not just inconvenient, it's discriminatory. Such a trek can be a significant physical challenge and demonstrates a lack of understanding and empathy for those who cannot easily navigate the area.
Events at Excel London must prioritise inclusivity and reasonable accommodation for all local residents and pedestrians. Security personnel should not only be allowing passage but should be trained comprehensively on disabilities and the appropriate language and attitude with which to engage.
Immediate action is needed to create a welcoming and accessible environment. This can be achieved by:
1. Implementing strict policies that ensure free and unobstructed access across the walkway for disabled individuals and local residents during events.
2. Conducting mandatory sensitivity and disability awareness training for all security staff to eliminate ableist behaviours and attitudes.
3. Establishing clearer communication channels for those requiring additional assistance, ensuring their needs are met swiftly and respectfully.
By supporting this petition, you can help drive change that respects the rights and dignity of disabled individuals and all Canning Town residents. Sign now to demand a more inclusive experience at Excel London events.
