The Issue

The roads are more than just pathways leading us to our destinations; they are the lenses through which we view our cities, counties, towns, and villages. However, the current state of the dual carriageways in England presents a disheartening picture. Filthy verges and scattered litter along these routes are not only unsightly, but they also pose severe threats to our environment and wildlife.

Despite the general public contributing significantly through Council Tax, which increases annually, there remains a conspicuous lack of action to address the accumulating litter. This negligence results in a disgraceful portrayal of our beautiful country and highlights an urgent need for systematic intervention.

We propose that National Highways and local councils establish a clear duty and timetable for regular litter-picking on England’s dual carriageways. By introducing structured schedules for cleaning, we can ensure our roads are maintained, reducing pollution and protecting wildlife habitats. This would also protect public health, strengthen pride in our community and restore the appearance of our shared spaces.

We are urging National Highways and local councils to prioritize this issue. By signing this petition, you can help ensure dual carriageways across England are free from unsightly rubbish and pleasant for all.
