Make Laundry Services Free and Functional for Allen University Students
The Issue
As a resident of the WDWW dormitory at Allen University, I am one of over 100 women living here who are facing an ongoing issue. Only 2 out of the 6-8 washers and dryers are currently working. This problem extends beyond just our dormitory. Students from various residences across campus are experiencing similar challenges. With inadequate laundry facilities, students are left with limited options and often have to wait in long queues just to wash a single load of laundry.
The additional financial strain of having to pay extra for laundry services further exacerbates the already tight budgets of many students. This means that many students, already burdened by financial struggles typical to college life, are unable to do their laundry regularly due to limited availability and additional costs. The current situation forces us to spend an extra $1.50-$3.00 per load just to ensure our clothes are thoroughly washed and dried - a cost that is simply intolerable for many.
Laundry is not a luxury; it's a basic necessity that should be included in our tuition fees without any extra charges or inconvenience caused by faulty machines. For those who can't afford these additional costs or find no available machines, they're left with unclean clothes which can affect their self-esteem and overall well-being.
This issue may seem minor at first glance but consider this: if students don't have clean clothes because they couldn't wash them over the weekend due to limited machine availability or lack of funds, they might choose not to attend classes. This could lead not only to academic problems but also contribute negatively towards mental health issues among students.
We urge the administration of Allen University to take immediate action on this matter - make laundry services free for all students and ensure all washing machines and dryers are working properly at all times.
Please sign this petition if you believe in making college life more manageable for financially struggling students by providing free laundry services as part of their tuition fees.
