I am constantly being harassed due to the compulsory nature of jury duty in our country. This is not just my story, but the reality of countless citizens who are unable to fulfill this obligation due to various personal circumstances. There are those among us who are disabled or caring for a disabled spouse, and yet they're forced to attend jury duty, causing undue stress and hardship.

Jury duty is a civic responsibility that should be respected; however, it should not come at the cost of personal well-being or infringe upon our individual rights. The current system does not adequately consider the unique situations many citizens find themselves in.

In New York State alone, thousands of people each year request exemptions from jury service due to disability or caregiver status (source: New York State Unified Court System). This number only reflects those who have managed to navigate through the complex exemption process - many more might be suffering silently.

We need Congress to enact legislation that makes jury duty optional nationwide. By doing so, we can respect individual circumstances while still maintaining a pool of willing and able jurors for our justice system.
