Make Juneteenth a National Paid Holiday

Make Juneteenth a National Paid Holiday
The Issue
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a significant day in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that all slaves were free. This day should be recognized and celebrated as a national holiday.
African Americans have been fighting for equality and justice since they were brought to this country against their will. The struggle for freedom did not end with the Emancipation Proclamation or the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is an ongoing battle that requires continued recognition and support.
Currently, only a few states recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday. It's time for our government to take action and make it a national paid holiday like Independence Day on July 4th.
According to Pew Research Center, only 60% of employers offer paid holidays on Juneteenth compared to 97% on July 4th. This disparity perpetuates systemic racism by ignoring the importance of African American history and culture.
Making Juneteenth a national paid holiday would send a message of unity and inclusivity while acknowledging America's dark past. It would also provide an opportunity for education about African American history and promote cultural awareness.
We urge Congress to pass legislation making Juneteenth a national paid holiday so that all Americans can celebrate freedom together.
