Make IXL More Inclusive for Neurodivergent Students

Make IXL More Inclusive for Neurodivergent Students
The Issue
Many students with autism, like myself, face unique challenges when using educational platforms like IXL. While these platforms are designed to improve learning, they often end up causing significant stress and anxiety for neurodivergent individuals. The rigid structure, timed activities, and repetitive nature can be overwhelming, leaving students feeling frustrated and defeated.
Current features of IXL lack the necessary flexibility and adaptability that students on the autism spectrum need. For instance, the strict time limits on exercises can induce stress, diminishing the learning experience. Additionally, the immediate feedback on wrong answers, although intended to guide students, can be discouraging, particularly when a student is already struggling to comprehend a topic. This approach does not align with the diverse learning needs of all students, especially those with autism, who may require a different pace or method of instruction.
To create a more inclusive learning environment, IXL should consider incorporating more customizable features for neurodivergent students. Options such as adjustable time limits, alternative feedback mechanisms, and less focus on repetitive drills could make the platform more accommodating. Moreover, providing teachers and parents with tools to adjust the platform’s settings according to individual student needs would help in crafting a more personalized learning experience.
Statistics show that about 1 in 54 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to the CDC. It's crucial that educational tools evolve to be more inclusive, considering the significant portion of the student population that could benefit from these improvements.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a change that could greatly enhance the educational experiences of many neurodivergent students. Together, we can urge IXL to make its platform more accessible and supportive, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to excel in their learning journey. Sign this petition to advocate for these necessary changes.
