Make it mandatory to report cat road accidents

Make it mandatory to report cat road accidents
The Issue
Midnights Law
My name is Danielle, and I am starting this petition following the tragic death of my cat Midnight, who was struck and killed by a vehicle earlier this week. The driver did not stop, and we were left with no way to help or find answers. This heartbreaking incident has opened my eyes to the lack of legal responsibility for drivers when it comes to cats involved in road accidents.
Under the current law in many regions, if a dog is struck by a vehicle, it is mandatory for the driver to stop, provide assistance, and report the accident. Unfortunately, this duty does not extend to cats, leaving many beloved pets vulnerable and their owners devastated when they are involved in road accidents. It's a glaring omission in the law that needs to be corrected.
In the UK alone, it is estimated that over 230,000 cats are killed on the roads each year, according to a report by Cats Protection. This number is not only shocking but also heart-wrenching for the families who lose their beloved companions. Without a legal obligation to stop and report, many pet owners are denied the opportunity for closure and the chance to seek necessary veterinary care that could save a cat’s life.
We need to urge lawmakers to take action and include cats in the existing legislation that requires drivers to stop and report animal road accidents. This adjustment can save lives and provide necessary closure to grieving families. Our pets are family and deserve the same legal protections extended to dogs.
Please join me in calling for change. Sign this petition to demand that it becomes a legal requirement for all drivers to stop, assist, and report when they hit a cat on the road. Together, we can create a safer, more compassionate community for our furry friends.
