Imagine leaving work or a social event, your heart racing as you hear footsteps behind you, or worse, facing an aggressor with no immediate means to protect yourself. This has been a concern for me and many others, and it's time we take action to address it.
Currently, UK law prohibits personal protection sprays, leaving citizens, especially women and girls, vulnerable. According to a report by the Office for National Statistics, in the year ending March 2023, an estimated 1.8 million women experienced domestic abuse. Furthermore, anecdotal evidence and media reports highlight countless instances of harassment and assault on the streets. Yet, women are frequently left without legal options for self-defence.
By legalising pepper spray or other self-defence sprays, we provide an affordable, accessible, and non-lethal means of protection. In countries where such sprays are legal, like the United States, instances of their use have allowed many individuals to escape dangerous situations, preventing potential assaults and giving women the confidence to navigate public spaces safely.
Critics may argue that legalising pepper spray could lead to misuse. However, with regulation, education, and guidelines in place, these concerns can be effectively managed. We propose a framework where buyers are required to undergo a simple online safety course explaining the responsible use of protection sprays. This ensures that the measure serves its intended purpose: defence, not offence.
Personal safety is a basic human right, and in a modern society like ours, we should equip everyone, especially women, with the means to protect themselves effectively.
