The Issue

Every day, countless dogs are walked in sweltering temperatures, unable to communicate their discomfort or distress. As a dog lover in the UK, I am deeply concerned about the wellbeing of these animals. I know that many pet owners are unaware of the risks associated with walking dogs in high temperatures. Dogs cannot tell us when they are too hot, and it is up to us to be their voice and advocate for their comfort and safety.

In recent years, rising temperatures have become a significant concern, with the UK experiencing some of its hottest days on record. According to the Met Office, 2026 has been the highest temperatures in recorded history for the UK, and trends suggest that these extreme conditions are becoming more frequent. Walking dogs in such heat puts them at risk of heatstroke, which can be fatal. Dogs' bodies are not designed to withstand excessive heat, with their only cooling mechanism being panting, which is often insufficient in extreme temperatures.

The RSPCA has reported numerous cases of dogs suffering from heat exhaustion, and yet there are no legal measures in place to prevent people from walking their pets in dangerous conditions. We can no longer ignore this issue. Other countries have already implemented laws that restrict dog walking during extreme temperatures to protect the animals' welfare.

It is crucial to establish a legal threshold for safe walking temperatures in the UK, creating guidelines that pet owners must follow to ensure their pets' safety and wellbeing. We propose that walking dogs should be prohibited when temperatures exceed 23°C (73°F), a point at which many veterinary experts agree that the heat becomes dangerous for dogs.

Such legislation will not only protect dogs but also raise awareness among pet owners about the dangers of hot weather on their pets. We urge the UK government to take immediate action to introduce a law that will make it illegal to walk dogs in dangerously high temperatures. By doing so, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and protect our beloved pets from harm.
