Make it illegal to photograph children in public

Make it illegal to photograph children in public
The Issue
Just recently, my children, nieces and nephews were enjoying their time at a local water fountain when I noticed 2 people with a camera, taking photos and videos of them. It was unsettling and intrusive. After confronting the individual about their actions the pictures and videos were deleted I called the police; however, much to our dismay, the authorities informed us that no legal action could be taken because there is no specific law prohibiting such behavior. All they could do was document the incident in their system, which doesn't change anything or prevent this from happening again.
This experience was not only disturbing but also brought to light a glaring gap in child protection laws. No parent or guardian should have to face the anxiety and fear that comes with knowing a stranger might have unauthorized photos or videos of their children. The safety and privacy of our children should be paramount, and clear legislation should be enforced to protect them in public spaces.
There are too many reports of children being photographed without consent and shared online without accountability. According to a report by the Pew Research Center, an increasing number of parents are expressing concerns over the uncontrolled spread of their children’s images on social media platforms, potentially leading to privacy and safety issues.
Our goal is straightforward yet incredibly important: to make it illegal for unauthorized individuals to photograph or videotape children in public places without explicit parental consent. This law would not only safeguard the privacy of our children but also deter potential predatory behavior and ensure that our public spaces remain safe for families.
It's crucial to urge legislators to prioritize this issue and pass legislation that addresses it. Protecting our children from unwanted attention and exposure is not just a personal concern, but a community and societal responsibility.
Sign this petition to demand lawmakers take immediate action in making it illegal to photograph children without consent in public places. Together, we can create safer environments for our children and give parents the peace of mind they deserve.
