The Issue
My child, who has special needs, has been yelled at by special education teachers entrusted with her care. This has left her frightened and hiding under blankets, only to be sent home with lies when she wouldn't come out. The principal dismissed my concerns, refused to reveal the teacher's identity, and even covered up the incident. It's time to hold these people accountable and prevent further incidents like this.
Yelling at children who require care, especially those with special needs, is not only traumatic but also detrimental to their development and wellbeing. If it is considered abuse for parents to yell at their own children, then why should it be any different in schools, daycares, or any institutions responsible for the care of our young ones? Caregivers are meant to cultivate a nurturing environment, conducive to learning and personal growth, not one that fosters fear and insecurity.
Research has shown that children exposed to yelling and aggression are more likely to develop emotional and psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, children dealing with verbal aggression are at a higher risk of developing these issues. Therefore, it is imperative to address this problem urgently to protect vulnerable children from harm.
We urge lawmakers to extend the same legal protections against verbal abuse for children in all care settings as they would for those at home. Establish clear and enforced policies that prohibit yelling and verbal aggression by caregivers, and ensure institutions are held accountable for violations. Additionally, implement mandatory training for caregivers on positive behavior management and communication skills.
Let us work together to make sure that every child feels safe and valued in their learning environment. Please sign this petition to help bring about this crucial change.
