Make it a law to require consent from kin before information sharing
The Issue
The loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and painful experience. Following the passing of my infant daughter, I was devastated to find that just hours after her inquest, personal information about my family was shared on a Cornwall live article. The article caused immense distress to my family and me. It is a violation of our privacy at a time when we were most vulnerable.
This is not just about my case; it is an issue that affects countless families across the UK. The dissemination of private information on social media platforms and online articles without the consent of the immediate family is not just intrusive but can also be damaging.
In the current digital age, where information can be easily shared and spread within seconds, it is crucial that there is a legal framework to protect families from such intrusions. We propose a law that mandates the consent of the main members of kin before their personal information is used in online articles and shared on social media platforms.
Implementing such a law would ensure that media outlets and social platforms respect the privacy and dignity of grieving families. This petition calls for policymakers to prioritize human empathy and respect, understanding that not everything that is legal is necessarily ethical.
The impactful change we seek is clear: to protect the privacy of individuals and families during sensitive times and to have a say over the information that becomes publicly accessible. It’s time to take a stand for individuals’ rights to privacy, particularly during the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
Please join me in calling upon our lawmakers to carefully consider the repercussions of media reporting and the crucial need for consent. Sign this petition to help create a compassionate legal shield for grieving families and demand a legislative change that respects family privacy at its most critical moment.
Hi, I am Ella and I have created this petition because I personally have been affected by this issue. After my baby girl Romi passing away, a while after her inquest was held, in which a member of the press was in attendance via video call, I did not get any choice over this.
A few short hours later, I open my phone to find my child’s death in a Cornwall live article, with each of our full names, and photos which were not of my baby. I did not get asked consent for this, and if I was I would have certainly denied this being created. This caused a lot of distress to myself and others. I am not the only person who has and will be impacted by this. Please sign to make a change
