Make it a crime to run over a cat and drive away

The Issue

While coming home today along McEwan Drive, I witnessed a horrifying incident. A car hit a cat and drove away, leaving the poor creature in distress. I abandoned my car and rushed to the cat's aid, wrapping her in my jacket and cradling her on my knee as I raced to the Crown vets. Despite my efforts, including performing CPR while driving and running red lights to reach the vet in time, she sadly passed away on my lap. It was a heartbreaking experience that no animal lover should have to endure.

This devastating experience has ignited a determination within me to ensure that such callous behavior does not go unpunished. Far too often, we hear of animals being struck by drivers who then simply drive away, indifferent to the suffering they have caused. It is a grave injustice that these actions are not punishable under current laws. Therefore, I urge you to join me in petitioning for legislative change.

Currently, there is no legal obligation for drivers to stop after running over a cat in many jurisdictions. This oversight must change. We propose that it become a legal requirement for drivers to stop and render assistance or report the incident if they accidentally injure a cat. This would undoubtedly save countless lives and raise awareness about the importance of responsible driving.

Statistics from animal welfare organizations highlight that thousands of cats are victims of road traffic accidents each year, with many left to suffer because of drivers who fail to stop. By making it a crime to run over a cat and drive away, we can deter this behavior and protect our beloved pets.

Let's come together as a community to advocate for compassion and accountability. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to implement laws that will safeguard our feline friends and prevent further unnecessary suffering.
