i have recently tried to insure our campervan and have found it to be an absolute nightmare ! we have hit brick walls and obstructions at every turn ! insurance companies that wont give you cover because you have a " low roof " ( below 1.8 metres) or you want to use your van as your " PRIMERARY VEHICLE " and dont have ,want or need a second vehicle ! or that you are not a member of a certain club or group ,some insurance companies are operating a virtual CLOSED SHOP approach ,a MEMBERS ONLY policy and completly refuse to let non members even get a quote ! 

MOTOR INSURANCE IS COMPULSORY IN IRELAND ,IT IS A LEGAL REQUIRMENT , yet these insurance companies deny people access to insurance meaning they are in breach of the road traffic act . they are litterally making people BREAK THE LAW ! 

Back in 2008 the eu warned the irish government it had to take control over the insurance industry ,the government did NOTHING and insurance companies got off scot free , now those same companies are enforcing rediculas rules and regulations on campervan owners , to such an extent that its a minefield of gobbledygook just to get a quote or refusal . 

our own van is recently converted ,it has passed all the legally required tests and revenue inspections ,is registered as a CAMPERVAN on the log book , TAXED as a campervan and ' identifies ' as a campervan !! 

yet according to every insurance company we have tried it doesnt qualify as such for insurance !! 

this is some form of discrimination towards self build campers and their owners ,the government and state through their own departments ( revenue, ministry of transport) class these  vehicles as campervans yet insurance companies see fit to ignore the state and refuse to accept them for insurance .

i have over 45 years driving experiance ,no convictions ,no fines, no bans , no penalty point, not even a parking ticket ! in those 45+ years i have paid THOUSANDS to the insurance industry and recieved NOTHING in return ! i think its high time these companies were brought to book and knocked down a peg or three , the government and its agencies need to step up and FORCE these companies to comply with the laws of the state and if they dont they should lose their licence to trade here !
