The Issue

As a student at Inglewood Middle School in Sammamish, Washington, I am increasingly concerned about the overwhelming presence of technology in our daily lives, even during sacred leisure times like lunch. I have witnessed my fellow classmates, choosing to engage with their school computers rather than interacting with one another, watching YouTube, playing games, and participating in activities that are against school policy. This behavior is symptomatic of a broader societal trend, where technology dominates our personal time, and I feel strongly that there is a need for change.

Our generation is increasingly caught in the whirlwind of a technology-driven world. Although technology holds many benefits, its overuse, especially in young people, is impacting social skills, mental health, and the ability to engage with the real world. By ensuring that lunch periods are free from computers, we can begin to foster an environment where students can connect more deeply with their peers, develop healthier social habits, and enjoy a sanctuary from online distractions.

Numerous studies have confirmed that social interaction among peers positively impacts young people's mental health, academic performance, and overall school experience. Yet, the constant allure of screens can detract from these vital interactions. The lunch hour provides a unique opportunity within the school day for students to relax, regroup, and recharge without the pressures of academic demands or electronic distractions. By making this a "device-free" period, we can ensure students have the space to build real-life social connections.

I propose that the school administration takes immediate steps to implement a no-device policy during school lunches. This can be achieved through measures such as:
1. Clear communication to students and parents about the importance and rationale behind this policy change.
2. Teachers and staff can monitor the cafeteria to ensure compliance.

With your support, we can take this small but significant step toward helping Inglewood Middle School students lead healthier and more balanced lives. Please sign this petition to make our school a model of positive technological balance and student well-being.
