Today is International dog day but in India for the Indian stray dog there is no difference. Even today a dog died due to human cruelty.
A pregnant dog was killed by a security guard of a residential society in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The guard hit her hard on her head when she tried to enter the society and then she died on the spot (Pic in the post) According to the caregiver the dog had delivered babies last year and ever since the caregiver was feeding her. She became pregnant again and may be out of hunger she tried to enter the society. But instead of food she got death.

Why wasn't the dog sterilized? She had already delivered babies last year then why did she become pregnant again? Do people even know about the ABC program? When will the municipal corporations create awareness about the ABC program and the animal laws? The existing punishments under prevention of cruelty to animals act 1960 are not harsh enough but at least the law exists. Then why isn't the common man aware about this law? And why are enforcement agencies so reluctant in implementing them?
There is a very high possibility that the security guard didn't know that killing a dog is a punishable offense. If he knew then the dog would be alive right now.
The municipal corporations have mostly played a villain for these helpless and mute animals.
Mini Vasudevan an engineer by profession returned to her home Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu from the US in the year 2004. Very soon she witnessed the hostile environment in which the stray dogs were living. She saw how pet owners were treating their dogs like commodities. No compassion, no love. And two years later in 2006 she was totally appaled by the way the Coinbatore Municipal Corporation was carrying out the ABC program. The dogs were tied in chains, some were in cages sitting on their own urine and feces. In India anybody who finds any kind of injustice being done to any animal they think of only one person and that is Maneka Gandhi. Maneka Gandhi is a member of parliament and an animal rights activist. So obviously Mini too approached her. She sent an email to her with pics of the dogs. But to her shock Maneka Gandhi told her to stop complaining and start working. These words haunted Mini for several days. And then one fine day she went to the municipal corporation with a clear agenda. Well Maneka Gandhi had already reprimanded the corporation for their negligent and cruel behavior and had told them to cooperate with Mini.
There is not a single animal rights activist in India or a caregiver in problem who has not approached this most magnificent lady. Many take offense by her blunt and sharp words but those who take her words seriously become Mini Vasudevan the lady who later opened her own animal welfare organization Humane Animal Society (HAS).
Just like Mini Vasudevan many in India have come out of their comfort zones and started working towards helping the helpless dogs.
And of course needless to say Maneka Gandhi has been the pillar of strength to most of them. Today is also her birthday. It's such a lovely coincidence that the international dog day and Maneka Gandhi's birthday is on the same day. May God give her a long and a healthy life.

It's time now for the municipal corporations, the police and the various ministries related with animal welfare to come to the rescue of our stray dogs. They are Indian dogs who have been deprived of love and compassion. Wonder what kind of Indians are we that we don't take pride in our own dogs? We kill them, shoo them and torture them almost daily.
