Although the crimes against dogs is not halting in India but there is still reason for jubilation. The reason is the growing people's movement for the sake of stray dogs in India. Some have been started by animal welfare NGOs and some by individuals who just couldn't wait for the govt to take concrete measures to give their four legged friends a life of safety, love and respect.
OOHA is a campaign started by a group of animal lovers in Mumbai, Maharashtra which stands for Out of Home Adoption. The OOHA campaign motivates people to adopt the street dogs by giving them a name, two square meal, water, medical aid and lots of love. One just needs to spend 10 minutes of their precious time every day with their adopted street dog. The Founder of PFA and former Union Minister for women and Child Maneka Gandhi is very excited about this campaign and is suporting it. Well this campaign is a step towards community ownership of street animals. Something which our forefathers did but unfortunately we have forgotton.
Animal rights activists from Baroda Kuhu and her mother Hansa have started a 'Quench for Thirst' Campaign for street animals and birds. This is the appeal they are making to the people of India:
"We want you to become a part of the 'Quench the thirst campaign' hoping to reach across as many cities and villages. Two easy steps and we can ensure no bird or a stray animal will have a parched throat in this scorching summer.
Step 1: Place a clean water bowl (all of us can afford one), or as many as you want, in a non-obstructive place, in shade, and please ensure to refill it everyday. If you have already placed a bowl, then,
Step 2: We are sure you know someone, a doer, who will replicate the karma like you and ask him/her to carry forward the good deed and the message (feel free to copy, paste or even translate to vernacular medium), thus forming a chain.
That one bowl of water maybe an elixir of life for someone in need. Hopeful of active participation, let good things become infectious for a change"

It's very shameful to see how animal laws are being flouted in India and dogs are being killed in broad day light without any reason. Let's hope the various campaigns started by animal welfare NGOs and like minded individuals bring a positive change in the mind set of people of India towards dogs. What the govt machinery failed to do let's hope these people succeed in doing. And in days to come no dog in India is abused, tortured and killed by we humans.
