There are hardly any stray dogs roaming on the streets of Nagaland an eastern state of India. The simple reason for this is that the dogs here are treated as a delicacy. They are killed for their meat.
As per prevention of cruelty to animals act 1960 dogs cannot be beaten, killed or relocated. The man's best friend is given legal protection as per animal laws but unfortunately majority of the Indians hate them and we have seen how they are killed and tortured on a daily basis. But not for food.
But the people of Nagaland have gone a step further. They kill the dogs to eat them. Seems it's their secret delicacy. But this delicacy is not allowed as per Indian law and Nagaland is a part of India. In the name of culture and food habit they cannot break the law.
The PFA founder and former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi has made an appeal to the public to send an email (csngl@nic.in) to the Chief Secretary of Nagaland Temjan Toy urging him to stop this mayhem and lawlessness in his state. The people of Nagaland have no right to violate the rules in the name of culture and tradition. These are some of the facts she has revealed about the state:
1 Nagaland seems to have no more stray dogs so they are now smuggling dogs from neighbouring states of West Bengal and Assam
2 The dogs are smuggled at night in trucks with their mouths tied with rope. In the process many dogs die of suffocation
3 The state runs an animal bazaar in Dimapur where dogs are sold for their meat (pic in the post). There are dog restaurants too where dog meat is served to the customers.

Many Indians will be shocked to know that such a barbaric thing is happening in India.
The Chief Secretary of Nagaland should immediately ask his state police to stop the illegal trade of dog meat in their state. Both the animal market at Dimapur and all the dog restaurants should be shut down.
