There are individuals battling Huntington's disease who desperately need healthcare they can afford. These people have lives, they have souls, and they are human beings just like the rest of us. They deserve to lead fulfilling and happy lives, yet their journey is obstructed by the exorbitant costs of treatments and inadequate research funding. It is up to us to change this narrative. We can't keep scrolling past this issue on our screens or turn a blind eye from the comfort of our own privileged lives. Huntington's disease is a devastating genetic disorder that affects the brain, progressively impairing a person's physical and mental abilities. Each year, approximately 30,000 Americans suffer from this disease, with nearly 200,000 at risk. The costs associated with managing Huntington's disease can be debilitating, reaching upwards of $140,000 annually per family in the United States alone, according to the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Yet there is no current cure, and very few treatments are financially accessible to the average family, leaving countless patients and their families overwhelmed and unsupported.

Greater investment in research is critical to developing more effective and affordable treatments for Huntington's disease. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) currently allocates a fraction of its budget to this condition compared to other neurological diseases. Increasing funding to prioritize Huntington's disease research could pave the way for breakthroughs in treatment and potentially, a cure.

We are calling on the U.S. government, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare providers to prioritize Huntington's disease by increasing funding for research and working towards making existing treatments affordable for all.
