Make higher education more accessible to people of all financial situations

Make higher education more accessible to people of all financial situations
The Issue
Problem:
In Marin County, many students particularly those from low-income and first generation backgrounds face a significant financial barrier to higher education. While many students receive financial aid, it often doesn't cover all expenses and many families are forced to allocate majority of their incomes or take out loans to afford tuition alone. These challenges not only affect students aspiring to pursue a higher education, but also students already enrolled in institutions. A 2023 survey by the California Student Aid Commission revealed that 66% of college students experienced food insecurity, and 53% faced housing insecurity. These figures represent a notable increase from 2018–19, when 39% reported food insecurity and 36% reported housing insecurity.
Goal:
To ensure that all students, regardless of socioeconomic background, have equitable access to quality education and the necessary support to pursue and complete higher education. This includes addressing teacher shortages and ensuring that qualified, experienced educators are equitably distributed across all schools.
Non-Profit Organization:
10,000 Degrees is a nonprofit organization based in San Rafael, California, dedicated to supporting students from low-income backgrounds in accessing and completing higher education. The organization offers comprehensive programs, including financial aid advising, scholarships, mentorship, and academic support. By collaborating with local schools and communities, 10,000 Degrees helps mitigate the impact of teacher shortages by providing additional academic support and resources to students in under-resourced schools, thereby promoting educational equity and college readiness.
