Make Hexham station Accessible for All!

The Issue

After 190 years, it’s time that Hexham railway station was
accessible to everyone.

Wheelchair users, those with restricted mobility, passengers with heavy luggage and parents with buggies should be able to travel independently.

Instead, passengers rely on a 19th Century barrow crossing, only open when the station is staffed.

A fully step-free Hexham station, with an accessible route between the platforms from the first train until the last will:

  • Enable improved access to work and leisure for disabled people.
  • Encourage people out of their cars and onto public transport, reducing congestion and CO2 emissions.
  • Reduce loneliness and isolation in our communities.
  • Bring significant benefits to the local economy.

Hexham station is the busiest on the Tyne Valley line with over 330,000 passengers a year.

Other stations in the country with far fewer passengers have had lifts installed. Hexham deserves better.

It’s not just morally the right thing to do, it makes economic sense too.

We call on Martin Gannon as NECA cabinet member for transport,
Kim McGuinness as North East Mayor and Heidi Alexander as Secretary of State for Transport to urgently address the inaccessibility of Hexham railway station by providing funding to ensure an accessible route between platforms, available from the first train to the last.
