The Issue

This is a matter of life and death, a reality I and many others face every day. Many individuals, particularly people of color, find themselves on waiting lists for transplants, often for years, experiencing unseen and unheard suffering. According to a 2020 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, African American patients with kidney failure are less likely to be referred for kidney transplants compared to their white counterparts, highlighting a grave disparity that leads to higher morbidity rates and increased mortality.
Furthermore, studies have indicated that African Americans are 68% less likely than whites to receive a desired organ transplant. The socio-economic barriers, along with racial prejudices, create a devastating impact on the lives of patients who are already battling severe health conditions.
