The Issue
The safety of our community is paramount, and nothing underscores this more than the personal experiences we've all had on Harding Road. Living in this area has given us a front-row seat to speeding cars that zoom past, unaware or unconcerned about the potential tragedies they bring in their wake. As a community member deeply invested in the well-being of our children, residents, and local wildlife, I am urging immediate action to address this ongoing risk. Harding Road, a vital thoroughfare in our community, constantly witnesses a flurry of activity and is predominantly traversed by students, families, and wildlife. Unfortunately, its current speed limit poses an ever-present danger to all. According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reducing speed limits by just 5 MPH in residential areas can decrease the likelihood of fatal accidents by as much as 30%. This statistic strongly supports our plea to bring the speed limit down from 35 MPH to 25 MPH on Harding Road. The current speed not only endangers the lives of our cherished community members but also threatens the biodiversity of our region. Wildlife crossings are not uncommon, and at higher speeds, drivers have less time to react to animals on the road, increasing the risk of collisions that could be easily avoided. Additionally, children and students are regular users of this route, walking or biking to nearby schools and parks. With cars traveling at lower speeds, the chances of a catastrophic accident occurring are significantly reduced. We have a clear and actionable path forward: lowering the speed limit on Harding Road. This change requires the cooperation and initiative of our local traffic board and city council. By signing this petition, you are contributing to a safer environment, advocating for positive change, and protecting both human and animal life. Let's unite to enforce this speed reduction and ensure that Harding Road becomes a safer, more secure space for all. We owe it not only to our families and friends but to the entire ecosystem that calls this neighborhood home. Please sign this petition and help us make a meaningful impact.
