The Issue

I believe that it is essential for consumers to have the right to make informed decisions about the meat they purchase and consume. As someone who values humane animal treatment, I am deeply concerned about the current lack of transparency in meat labelling. It is personal to me because I strongly advocate for humanely slaughtered meats rather than religiously slaughtered ones, which I find inhumane and causing unnecessary suffering to animals.

Currently, there is a significant gap in consumer knowledge regarding whether the meat they purchase has been slaughtered according to halal or kosher practices. These practices, which are based on religious laws, involve specific slaughter methods that many in the UK feel are not aligned with their personal values regarding animal welfare.

According to a study by the Food Standards Agency, a substantial portion of the animal population in slaughterhouses is processed without stunning, a practice commonly associated with halal and kosher slaughtering methods. The Humane Slaughter Association notes that pre-slaughter stunning is a more humane practice as it reduces the animal's consciousness and prevents unnecessary suffering.

This lack of clear labelling not only deprives consumers of their right to make informed choices but also obscures pertinent information under vague terminologies or reference codes. This can be misleading and does not allow a fair opportunity for individuals to exercise their ethical preferences and dietary choices.

In countries like Denmark and Switzerland, specific regulations ensure transparency in meat labelling, allowing consumers to choose products that align with their ethical and religious values. The UK can and should follow suit by implementing legislation that mandates all meats sold in the country to be clearly labelled if they are halal or kosher slaughtered. These labels should use the exact terminologies and not be hidden in reference codes.

This change would not only uphold consumer rights but would also promote more humane slaughtering practices by creating a demand for transparently labelled products and encouraging suppliers to adopt more ethically appealing methods.

Join me in urging the UK government to take a stand for consumer rights and animal welfare by signing this petition. Together, we can make a significant step towards a more transparent and ethical system in meat production and labelling.
