The issue

When I was a child, the magical spirit of Christmas was a cherished time filled with wonder and joy. I vividly remember waking up early with anticipation, hoping to see what gifts Santa Claus had left for me under the tree. However, my experience was tarnished when I innocently used the Internet to search, "Is Santa real?" The cold, factual response shattered a beloved part of my childhood.

This experience is not unique to me. My close friend and sister also faced similar heartbreak when they encountered the same disappointing answer online. Understanding the magical allure of Santa Claus is a crucial piece of childhood innocence and wonder, and realizing it's just a myth can prematurely harshen the sweetness of these formative years.

Research shows just how deeply children believe in Santa and how that changes as they grow up:

  • Under 7: Belief is very strong, with around 90% of children convinced in one study.
  • 4–8 Years Old: This is the peak belief period, with numbers like 85% still holding strong.
  • Around 8–9 Years Old: The major drop-off point; 62% stopped believing by age 9 in one survey, notes MadeForMums.
  • Age 10: More than 4 in 5 children know the truth

We live in a time where information is just a click away, and curious children often turn to Google for answers. Seeing Santa dismissed outright on such a widespread platform deprives them of experiencing the same joy and imagination we once did.

Therefore, we are asking Google to consider revising their response to the question, "Is Santa real?" by providing an answer that protects children's innocence and imagination. We're not suggesting Google should lie, but perhaps offer a response that gently alludes to the joy and love that Santa represents, without outright denying his existence.

By making this change, we can preserve the enchanting part of childhood for millions of kids around the world and maintain the wonder and excitement associated with the holiday season. Please join me in requesting Google to update their search response to "Is Santa real?" to a version that nurtures rather than diminishes the spirit of childhood.
