Make going to the toilet in schools a human right

The Issue

In my school life, there have been numerous occasions when I've been told that I can't use the toilets, even when I've had a pressing need. My classmates and I have faced similar denials, and some suffer from medical conditions that make access to the restroom crucial. It's shocking and wrong that in 2025, students are denied this basic human right—the right to relieve themselves in comfort and dignity.

Toilet access is not just a convenience; it's a fundamental human right, essential to health and well-being. According to the United Nations, the right to sanitation is essential for a life of dignity and is one of the elements of the human right to an adequate standard of living. When schools fail to provide students with unrestricted access to sanitation facilities, they not only undermine this right but also jeopardize students' health, academic performance, and dignity.

Statistics reveal that lack of access to clean facilities can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and even medical complications for young students. Children with medical conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or bladder issues are most severely affected, often leading directly to absenteeism and a lower quality of life.

We propose a simple yet powerful solution: implementing a district-wide or nationwide policy that unequivocally recognizes toilet access as a human right in education settings. By establishing guidelines and training teachers on the importance of this issue, schools can foster an environment that is both respectful and supportive of students' needs.

Further, an anonymous reporting system can be put in place for students to safely report violations without fear of retribution. Such measures will not only prevent denial of access but will also educate faculty and staff on the importance of accommodating the human rights of every student.

It's time we move beyond outdated policies that fail to recognize students' basic needs. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for the fundamental rights of students everywhere. Join us in demanding that our schools respect the dignity and health of their students by ensuring access to toilet facilities for all.
