The Issue

Glendaal Elementary School, located at 774 Sacandaga Road, Glenville, NY 12302, is situated in a 45mph speed zone flooded with speeding vehicles and 18-wheeler trucks. This presents a significant danger to our children, particularly as we anticipate an influx of new students and the addition of three special needs programs starting in September 2026. This situation is alarming, given that students' safety is at stake as they enter and exit the parking area which is extremely close to this state road.

Despite being the only school under the Scotia Glenville School District not designated as a school zone, Glendaal Elementary now more than ever requires this critical status change. A school zone designation would lower speed limits dramatically during school hours, reducing the risk and creating a safer environment for our children.

Studies have shown that lower speed limits around school zones lead to significantly fewer pedestrian incidents and make drivers more aware of their surroundings. Taking this action would protect not only the students but also the faculty and families who regularly access the school.

With increased enrollment and the introduction of programs for special needs children, it is vital that these kids are offered the same level of safety as their peers in other district schools. Parents and community members are worried daily about the dangers that fast-moving traffic poses to the young and vulnerable.

We understand it can be a complex process to designate a school zone, but swift action must be taken to keep our children safe. We urge local and state authorities to conduct the necessary evaluations and implement changes before the September 2026 school term.

Please sign this petition to transform Glendaal Elementary into an official school zone and safeguard the future of our children.
