Make Girard Safe for Children and Families
The Issue
Traffic safety on Girard Avenue is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed immediately.
During the week of June 1st there were two car accidents on Girard Avenue between the intersections of 31st Street and 30th Street that involved cars speeding, hitting parked cars, and flipping over. Additionally, during the week of June 8th, there was another accident involving two cars between the same intersections. These accidents are not isolated incidents and are emblematic of a broader problem with traffic safety on Girard Avenue, especially between the intersections of 31st Street and 29th Street. Tragically, in 2022, a young child was killed while walking on the sidewalk near the intersection of 30th Street and Girard Avenue when a drunk driver jumped the curb and struck the child. Unfortunately, people continue to routinely drive dangerously in this area and engage in reckless behavior such as running the red lights at the 31st Street and Girard Avenue intersection, driving excessively over the speed limit, and darting into oncoming traffic.
This section of Girard Avenue is home to several families with young children and elderly residents. The need for improved safety measures is urgent! Below is a list of potential precautions that can be taken by the City of Philadelphia to improve traffic safety on Girard Avenue. The goal is to obtain at least 100 signatures on the petition and request a meeting with the District 5 city council representative, Jeffery Young Jr. to discuss a path forward towards implementing the necessary changes. Please note that the list below is not exhaustive and can be expanded as our efforts become more organized.
If safety is a priority for you and your family, please add your name to the petition.
Safety Improvement Requests
- Install a photo/video enforcement camera at the intersection of 31st Street and Girard Avenue to enforce compliance with the traffic lights.
- Install traffic lights, a crosswalk, and a photo/video enforcement camera at the intersection of 30th Street and Girard Avenue.
- Lower the speed limit to 15 mph.
